The LBD

The ‘little black dress’, the LBD, was associated with my teenage imagination, as the pinnacle of sophistication, sexuality and adulthood. I knew I would ‘get in’ and that I would ‘pull’ in my slinky black number, as an underage clubber in a sleazy club. Although I believed I was a sophisticated fifteen-year-old vixen, in reality I was a child wearing slutty cheap lycra with sequins and thus the LBD became a tainted memory of childish sexuality.

As a result I had very ambivalent feeling about the LBD, and by the time I was eighteen, I found the LBD a boring wardrobe choice. I became obsessed with metallic silver dresses worn with over-sized Jack Wills shirts, hot-pink tutu skirts worn with large graffiti converse boots and leather jackets and a striped dress from Kai Kaur rai. I had a Topshop LBD obsessive blip for a few months but it wasn’t until recently, at the tender age of twenty-three I discovered why LBD, how LBD and when LBD.

WHY LBD
Why do magazines covet them, why do women wear them, what distinguishes the LBD from the little grey dress, the little blue dress, the little red dress? The truth is, my teenage association of the LBD as sophisticated adult sexuality was right. There is something dangerously flattering about black, when worn in the right way, for every woman.

HOW LBD
The elongated black silhouette cuts a powerful figure, accentuates your curves, and flatters your sides, in a way that no other colour manages. Think of the LBD as the shadow effect, smoothing everything out and emphasising your curves. The colour is safely sophisticated, yet dramatic, and that is often what we require ourselves to be.

WHEN LBD
As a teenager the LBD looks like a child dressing up and asking for fun. For the powerful woman and her proportions, the LBD works in a much more interesting way. It needn’t be a boring wardrobe choice, wear LBD’s with ruffles, interesting silhouettes and the longer the better. Try not to wear it with too much colour as you’ll undermine its striking effect, avoid completely shapeless designs and obviously smutty designs – the perfect middle ground is needed to make the perfect LBD purchase.

For some great LBD’s, check them out on House of Beth!

Knitwear at House of Beth!

Miss Selfridge UK 10 bright print cardigan
Miss Selfridge UK 10 £11
Hasn’t it gotten cooler all of a sudden! Well that’s to be expected I suppose, and although it is cold there are some really lovely winter woollies out there to look forward to! I love all the psychedelic printed knits at the moment as well as the warmer colours. And while we’re not technically in the midst of a dark cruel winter yet, there’s no harm in being prepared!

House of Beth have some wonderful ways in which to keep warm over the next few months- Among them is the Miss Selfridge Bright Pink Cardigan available online. I love the fab zig zag style with the bright colors, a brilliant cardi to liven up the dullest of autumn and winter days!
Vivienne Westwood Red Label short cardigan UK 8
Vivienne Westwood UK 8 £45

House of Beth have some great designer pieces on offer too! The Vivienne Westwood Red Label Short Cardigan is a real gem! I love the bright red on this cardigan but also that it’s very smart too! Wear it to the office over your formal top or even over a vest top on the weekends! A versatile item of clothing that looks at home with a pair of jeans or office wear!

St John Collection by Marie Gray beige gold cardigan
St John's Collection UK 12 £65
Although often seen as being chunky, knitwear can be very feminine and flattering on the body too! I love this tie belt cardigan from the St John Collection by Marie Gray. The beige and gold is also very seasonal, along with the tie belt at the waist and the strong shoulder lines it’s a really attractive piece. A fabulous everyday way to be glam! This cardigan has definitely got ‘wear all winter’ potential!

Tips on Warm Living:

HOT BLOGS

Perhaps a thicker version of this?
Autumn thus far, has been freezing, and we all know it’s only going to get worse. Rain, hail, wind. Wrap up warmly our mothers say, but the truth is, no matter how many layers you expertly put together, out in the blistering streets, your face will always be cold and exertions will make your body sweaty. Until Alexander McQueen showcases some wearable-ish balaclavas (maybe with lace?) nothing is going to help.

You can feel it coming; this weather can not be stopped nor denied. So I am going to offer you some suggestions on how to keep you warm with some blogs to keep you smiling, though from your hair icicles may be dangling.

Duvet Sandwich: My housemate used to do this, making a duvet sandwich, with one duvet below and one on top. Like a much less restrictive, elongated sleeping bag. Perfect with a hot water bottle if you’re not already sharing your bed with a human heater (man/woman).

Heat things: Once upon a time I was working in Manchester (God, it was so cold!) and I think my favourite day ever was when a company were giving heating pads out free at Manchester Piccadilly station. They are small bundles of heat joy you can stuff in your pockets, nestling your gloved fingers next to them.

Blogs to read: Apart from House of Beth of course, here’s a few that will warm the cockles of your lungs.

The London Fashion Week review

We have just seen Fashion Week and a sneaky peek at what’s to come for us in spring and summer
2013! I’ve been checking out some of the big designers and there have been some really adorable
pieces on show. We have seen a lot of prints and geometric shapes especially in the case of Sass
and Bide’s cheeky burlesque inspired short dresses! Maria Grachvogel’s collections of pastel and monochrome inspired dresses have some amazing feminine aspects to them. As for accessories I love the Anya Hindmarsh Satchel style bags with neon shoulder straps too.

There’s a lot to look forwards to, but spring and summer 2013 seems like an age away! What about
over the coming months? Here are some of the top trends to help you look hot on those cooler
days!

Houndstooth/Checks and Tartan

This is a huge trend over the coming months; we are seeing a lot of tartan and check patterns. You
don’t have to be part of a highland clan to rock that tartan on your six inch stilettoes! Houndstooth
is also going to be huge this season and not just on coats. Think oversized and asymmetric black and
white patterns on dresses as well as accessories; mix this up with your tartan rara skirts or fitted
jeans.

Wedge heels and Flatforms

The last time we saw flatforms was back in the 1990’s when the Spice Girls rocked those towering
platform trainers. Without a heel they were named the ‘Flatform’. Over the summer we saw some
absolutely gorgeous summer shoes, the trend is still going strong well into the autumn. Don’t go
throwing those peeptoe or sandal flatform to the back of the wardrobe just yet. Instead try wearing them with some patterned woolly tights? Add some legwarmers around the ankles for added warmth and a quirky style.

Peplums

Once a reserve of those wanting to relive those Joan Collins Dallas days; we saw the peplum backwith a vengeance over the summer. On those bright colour block and floral dresses during the summer months. The shorter skirt over the longer skirt style is very in and does amazing things to any girl’s waist regardless of size and shape. Perfect for those ‘straight up and straight down’ figures adding shape while also great on those curvier girls.

Motifs: This is another very popular trend this season; we have seen everything from cats to oddly
moustaches! It’s anything goes when it comes to motifs. Some may consider animals on clothing
Racer back leopard top UK 8 - 10to be childish and a little eccentric maybe, but wildlife motifs are everywhere this season. Foxes, owls and rabbits can be seen on sweaters and scarves as well as accessories! Call it revisiting ourchildhoods but we love them! Why not sport an animal motif that’s most like you? Are you as cunning as a fox? As wise as an owl or fluffy like a cute little bunny? Take your pick of this season’s animal motifs!

Sportswear Style for House of Beth

There has always been something so intriguing about sportswear. It serves a very practical purpose, and yet from it’s very inception, has has a surprisingly large fashion impact. Trimmed, toned, fit and fabulous: the power of the iconic cropped top and cycling shorts combo is unsurpassed by it’s practical and fashionable offering. It is a fab way to look super sleek that is only accessible to those sweating it out at the gym- Until now that is! Sportswear has never been more exciting, especially with London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics!

Examples of designers who have sat up and taken notice of this trend include Alexander Wang, the collection for spring/summer this year reveals American football and varsity inspired cardigans and athletic socks, shown at New York Fashion Week. During Milan’s fashion week we saw Bottega Venetta's models in Karate and Tennis inspired sporty head bands. Gucci has come up with a scuba diving theme complete with sports mesh and harnesses. Jonathan Saunders model’s used the wet-hair look- very in keeping with the swimming theme. The London University of the Arts have got in on the trend and are offering a BA (Hons) in Fashion Sportswear. Fashion is so obviously in the process of producing the next generation of fashion sportswear designers- a sure sign that Haute Couture Sportswear is here to stay! Want to rock the Sportswear Style? Here are some hot sporty trends to look out for:

The Body Con: ‘Body Conscious’ dresses were introduced to the catwalks a few seasons ago and have never really left us. A prime example of combining the fashion with sporty: The use of Elastane (Spandex) and other Lycra based fabrics have proven very popular. This is primarily because it ‘pulls in’ and ‘pushes out’ in all the right places making for a sleek and sexy silhouette!

Stella’s Olympian style: As you are most probably aware lots of fashion designers have been getting in on the action. Stella McCartney has worked with Adidas to come up with a range of sportswear for the GB team. It’s classy but daring enough to make an impact! The range of Stella McCartney sportswear will no doubt be highly sort after once the Olympics are over, a great range that will inspire other designers to follow in its wake.

Red, White and Blue: No doubt that over the past couple of years with the Royal wedding, Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics there has never been a better time to be a Brit! The colours of the Union Jack are a very hot trend and can be seen on everything sporty! Don’t be shy about donning your Lycra Union Jack and wearing the colours with pride during the coming seasons.

House of Beth has this Fashionable sports mix covered, in particular the structured Leopard Print Leotard with shoulder pads. House of Beth also offers a Sportsmax yellow and black check with asymmetrical hemline, perfect for a lunch date or a busy weekend on the go. Or the Marc Jacobs dress? Take a look at House of Beth’s website for some great sportswear inspired fashion!

Walking through recent trends: Love or Hate them?

It is really rather interesting, the way people relate to ‘trends’, either with disinterested contempt, expressing a vague interest or approaching trends the way a conqueror approaches new found land. Love them or be simply bored by their continuous demands on your purse, they are key to the way we all dress. Even by wearing trousers you’re following a post 1940s historical trend. What really is a trend then, you may ask thoughtfully: A general direction in which something is developing or changing, is google’s helpful answer. With that vague definition floating in your minds I am going to outline a few of my favourite and hated trends from the past five years and the present day.

Hated Trends.

The Motel Dress: Hate may be too strong a word for this trend and I didn’t hate the items in the beginning. The problem with this dress, and you will know the dress I am talking about: navy, white or black on a tight top and flowery beneath, is that everyone had it. True, it was flattering, but it was over-done, and became the sign of the un-imaginative easy-to-wear purchase.

Tiny shorts and boob tube with tights: Possibly Lana Del Rey can wear a tiny pair of shorts, with a boob tube, tights, and look interesting. For most, it says either child, or adolescent on a night out. Like the trend above, it is un-imaginative and in addition says One Thing.

Posh dresses with cut-outs: Call me old fashioned, but dresses that resemble pretty ball gowns are cheapened by incisions beneath the bust. I am sure the designer asked, how can we expose more flesh, in a new and irreverent way, and this is how these triangles of flesh on an unexpected part of the body was born. It really does work on a casual ‘let’s hang out on the beach’ dress, but not for sweeping across the red carpet or dance floor. (This point does exclude the open back, ball gowns with an open back look fabulous.)

Cheap lace dresses: I am partial to bit of lovely lace, but more vintage looking than the recent high street lace dresses that have flooded the low-end high street. Cheap lace attached to some polyester, with a bad design, does look cheap. Lace should say an old-school kind of luxury, something even a bit gothic. The way lace interacts with material is important – and can go easily wrong. If you love lace and can’t afford the high-end side, try vintage as an alternative.

Favourite Trends.

The collar (with a necklace underneath): This is a recent trend that at first I wasn’t too sure about. However my colleague Talia introduced me to wearing it, either as a separate accessory with a cashmere jumper, a scoop neck dress, a sheer top, or an over-sized t-shirt. White on white is preferable, and pearls beneath the collar is a fun preppy addition. Why is this one of my favourite trends? It’s a quick way to smarten up any outfit and it looks great. Rita Ora agrees!
Best buy: They were selling beautiful metal and sequin collars at the V&A: Want.

Translucent: This trend may be a bit too done, especially when it comes to translucent shirts, but they are still a great way to look casually sexy, especially if it is good material.
Best Buy: For a more original take on the translucent, try this vintage dress

Thigh high socks: Okay, I know socks are a bit school-girl, which makes what I am about to say sound slightly wrong. But at university, there were no outfits that felt more sexy, than wandering around in a pair of thigh high socks, an over-sized blue man shirt and loose tousled hair. There were variations to this outfit of course, and the truth was that socks were extremely useful when there was student accommodation with no heating and shoes that gave blisters without socks. Though post-university, I have designated thigh highs to a more youthful age, there will always be a place in my heart for them.
Best Buy: M&S, great staples.

Long oversized shirt with leggings or shorts: It is seriously comfortable, perfect for hangovers, studying and for chilled out excursions. An acceptable form of pajamas; may this trend stay forever.

Head bows, head-pieces, feathers and flowers: Wearing scarves tied up into a bow- the head bow trend, particularly suits girls with short hair, it is fabulous 1950s chic. It is a trend that has been around for a while, and I still love it. Flowery wreaths are a festival trend must, as are feather crowns. My favourite head piece trend is the golden head-piece, which to me is an acceptable form of a tiara, but a bit more sophisticated. Best Buy: It’s all about the golden headpiece.

Fifty Shades of Fashion
The World has seen a myriad of colours over the past few weeks; here in the U.K it’s been all about sporting the reds, blues and whites of the Union Jack. But also the metallic shades of Gold, Silver and Bronze. While this has all been rather exhilarating, nothing has wetted our literary appetites more than those fifty shades of grey!
E.L James’s debut novel has made grey one of the hottest colours around. The novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ has taken the world by storm being the fastest selling book of all time. It seems that we can’t get enough of the kinky Mr Christian Grey. The movie is in the pipeline and Fifty Shades fanatics are waiting on tenterhooks to see who will play the lead role.
For those of you who have been living on a desert island for the past couple of months, the novel charts the meeting and then subsequent sexual adventures of billionaire business tycoon (and BDSM enthusiast) Christian Grey with the innocent and inexperienced Anastasia Steele. The two begin what at first seems like a professional physical relationship soon developing into something that neither of them expect or know how to deal with. To say that this novel is ‘engaging’ is the understatement of the century!
Are you a fan of the demanding but delicious Mr Grey? Do you want to express your love for all things grey? Well there’s been no better time to do so! Check out the fabulous range of sensual grey clothing and accessories on House of Beth.

For something figure hugging and very sensual on the skin, we love this Elm Dress in a size 8-10. The fancy detailed tie belt is not only figure enhancing but in keeping with some of the themes of the book. Belts are featured heavily in the novel so you will be right on trend with this beautiful dress.

Just who wears the trousers in the relationship between Anastasia and Christian? Why Mr Grey of course! Or so it seems at first. Get in on the action with this fitted straight legged number. Perfect for the office or even when being flown to exotic locations in the personal helicopter of a billionaire play boy! Team these trousers with a fitted blouse that will show off all those curves, playful but professionally discreet at the same time.

Mr Grey is known to be a little on the serious side and perhaps needs to lighten up. But it just wouldn’t be the same! There is something so attractive about the alpha male that some of us girlies just adore. However this is no reason why you can’t add something a little fun and flirty to your own grey style: Try this fabulous Deci Dela knitted dress with a chiffon style bottom, perfect for those more romantic evenings out!

Can't get enough of denim!

There’s no denying it, the love affair with denim is never going to quite diminish. This extends to whether it’s a highly priced pair of jeans or something you picked up from a second-hand store. The more pre-loved the better in so many cases. It’s one of the most versatile fabrics, originally used for ‘worker’ clothing. The hard wearing durability of denim was prized above style, but this fabric soon evolved to become a highly stylised item. It’s just so surprisingly figure flattering, sensual even - it wasn’t long before the fashion industry sat up and paid attention.

The major appeal is that anyone can wear it; from teenager to pensioner. It was a massive hit with youth throughout the 70’s and 80’s, the statement of rebellion. Blondie’s Debbie Harry rocked the fitted and oh-so-feminine denim look along with the likes of The Rolling Stones and Queen.
While always being on trend, denim has evolved and dare I say it ‘grown up’ a little from those heady days of the neon and pastel hued eighties. Every season seems to have a different take on denim style whether it is Combat Jeans or Flairs, or the return of the denim jacket. But how is it done this season?

Layering it: This is a very cool way of wearing your denim this season; why not try wearing that short jeans jacket with a florals or a striped shirt and barely-there vest top? Roll up the sleeves to reveal the details of your shirt. Think ‘Preppy’ and you will make an inspired summer statement.

Mix it: Denim is arguably one of the few fabrics that can be teamed with practically any other pattern, go ahead and be as experimental as you like with it. Try your hand at adding an Aztec or ethnic style pattern to your denim outfit. It’s all about the tribal print this autumn so be ahead of the trend.

D.I.Y Denim: Feel free to mess about with your denim, rip it up, tie or dip dye it, there are no hard and fast rules to doing it alone. Denim is a touch fabric so can endure a multitude of sins should you so wish to give that worn pair of jeans a new lease of life.

Wear it oversized: Have that favourite piece of denim clothing that just doesn’t fit anymore? Perhaps you have lost a ton of weight on that diet but still adore your denim summer coat. Not ready to part with it just yet? There’s no reason why you should completely give up on wearing it, oversized demin is the rock & roll alternative to leather for the summer.

Summer Pastels
Pastels are a quick and fashionable way to inject a hit of summer into any outfit. They add edge and excitement to an all-black ensemble. In a sea of ‘tasteful’ grey, black and navy, subtle pinks, purples, greens and blues add some spark and draw the eye.

The strips of pale pink add drama to this black diaphanous dress

Then there’s the bolder look - colour blocking. Right on trend, this is bound to bring a smile to your face, even when it’s drizzling. Cover yourself in slabs of colour - a light pink top with sexy high-waisted jeans, or a stunning turquoise dress for fancier dos, and feel your fashionista confidence glow with the pastels.

Finally, there’s the ladylike pastel. Think demure picnics in the park with strawberries and cream, or a tea party with cupcakes. Fifties-style printed dresses with pastel floral patterns are perfect for lifting the spirits on a cloudy day - they transport you to a more glamorous era. These dresses embrace your curves, upping your summer sexiness without you having to shiver in skimpy clothes. Finish with a slick of crimson lipstick to really illuminate your face.

Probably the most adorable thing you’ll see all day

It’s time for a colour safari with House of Beth’s
online shop - go on and brighten your day!

Ten ways to dress for summer while it’s raining!

Yes, at a time of year when we really should be all out in the sunshine lounging in gardens and parks while not wearing very much at all, it has officially been the wettest June in the UK ever recorded!
Summer this month just wasn’t to be, and every day so far has been an umbrella day. Weather forecasters say that this trend is set to continue so we may as well learn how to look truly fabulous in the rain! Here are a few fabulous suggestions of ethical fashion for you.

Ralph Lauren Sport shorts UK6 £35.00 from House of Beth
Shorts: Once known as a staple item in any tennis-lovers Wimbledon wardrobe, the humble pair of shorts has come a long way in all its various guises and lengths. In fact it has never been more popular regardless of the rain! Think fitted and figure flattering for those summer ladies who want to bare their perfect pins. No matter what the length they can still look amazing whether basking in the sunshine or tropical thunder storms- although we don’t recommend being out in a tropical storm in any fabulous outfit. Everyone is wearing them with black tights, but try to wear them with clear to look bare, yet be warm, as befitting of a summer goddess.

Splashy Splosh Shoes: Wearing boots over the summer needn’t be something to frown about- with the massive trend in military style footwear over the past two or three seasons- it’s a really hot trend! It is advisable to put away those ultra-feminine dainty flats and peep-toe sandals. It’s all about the boots that look like they have trekked through a field and then some!
Step boldly out into the rain looking fashionably chic in your old pair of muddy ankle high block heels or lace ups.
The Oversized Coat: There is something a little mysterious about a woman wearing that oversized trench coat no matter what her frame! Pull the belt around your waist and it’s one of the most figure flattering items a girl could ever wish for. You can have that instant hourglass figure that you have been lusting after- especially perfect for straight up and straight down figures! Why not try teaming a pencil skirt and jersey style top with a classy coat from House of Beth’s collection?

Paula Ka camel coat £115

The Summer Dress:  Whatever you do, do not let gale force winds and torrential rain put you off wearing your gorgeous knee length dress or maxi this summer. Ok so the weather is not encouraging when you want to wear your favourite dress but that doesn’t mean that you can’t! All you need are some practical boots and a casual waterproof, for ‘floral at a festival’ look. Besides, you will provide a feeling of a summer, which the sky has failed to do. You can try on any of House of Beth’s lovely collection of bright and floral dresses to add a well needed splash of colour to the dullest of June days!

Love Labels? Choose to Reuse!

We all know that fashion trends will inevitably die and be reborn in a similar form again (although there is no telling how soon or in what form this will take place) one way or another. Kind of like Jesus perhaps.
Does this means that we ought to hang onto those old clothes, even the ones that are so ‘last season’?
First things first: You can still say goodbye to that old trench and be ethical, because as much as we love clothes to be reborn, there is only a certain amount of wardrobe space. Try swish swapping! It is becoming more popular, and some of the big name clothes retailers are now sitting up and taking notice. Marks and Spencer’s are an example of this fresh new attitude; they have started up their very own Shwop scheme. One in which you are invited to bring in and drop off an item of ‘old’ or unwanted clothing. You can then drop it off when buying new clothes. They will then work with larger organisations to reuse and recycle your pre loved (or perhaps not so ‘pre loved’) clothes.
From an ethical point of view it is a very worthwhile practice. The general reusing of clothes could mean that there would be less demand for new clothes, less wastage and demand for poorer countries to work tirelessly in sweatshops for meagre wages.
From a Fashion viewpoint keeping those old clothes is brilliant! Especially now, it seems like everyone and their aunt is getting on the vintage bandwagon. Women everywhere love anything retro and it’s about more than just dressing up for a fancy dress party. Themed parties are all the rage, and it is surprising, post-childhood, how much you’re required to find an outfit for obscure dress up themes. Second hand clothes websites are a fabulous way of picking up genuine period clothing for next to nothing- whether it’s the forties and fifties or the swinging sixties you are into.
Another great reason to shop for second hand clothes online is that in so many cases they may not have even been worn, even better: Hardly worn at all. But the price in so many cases will reflect that they are second hand items. With some savvy shopping you can get a great bargain for half the price or maybe even less. Even more so when talking about designer labels!

It’s all about looking a million pounds without having to spend a million pounds- or anywhere near it! Check out House of Beth’s amazing selection of pre-loved clothing along with great new designers. Among the names there are All Saints, Paul Smith, Cath Kidston, Vivienne Westwood, and Karen Millen. The handpicked items at the House of Beth online website show that reusable fashion can offer you some real steals! Fabulous for those of us with a lust for labels but a restricted budget!
